The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) was established in 1945 with the purpose to enrich Australia through the lawful and orderly entry and stay of people seeking immigration toAustralia. When it came into existence, it was known as Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA). This name was later changed to Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA). Today this organization is called the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and handles all matters related to Australian immigration and citizenship.

Other key objectives set out in the DIAC plan are:

• Ensure the integrity of Australia’s border so as to curb human trafficking and terrorist activities.
• Help integrate the new migrants into the Australian society by helping them appreciate cultural diversity, value the Australian citizenship thus enabling them to participate equitably in the progress of Australia.
• To shoulder humanitarian responsibilities very seriously and DIAC’s humanitarian program is one among the top three in the world committed to the resettlement of refugees from overseas.

DIAC has so far managed to successfully settle around 6.5 million migrants from 200 countries which include the 660,000 migrants under various humanitarian programs.

During the year 2005-2006, DIAC has issued a total of 3.97 million temporary visas for visitors and other classes; got 13, 000 people registered as citizens and conferred citizenship on 102,000 people; helped nearly 143,000 migrants to Australia, resettled around 14 000 people under humanitarian and refugee programs and worked closely with other government agencies to protect the integrity of Australia’s borders.
