Student lifestyle the world over is quite different from the rest of society. You have your own group of friends, places you like to go and your own routines. This is especially true if you are living away from home.

Australia is fast becoming a very popular destination for education. The main reasons for this are

  • the highly competitive courses that can be undertaken
  • the fees as compared to American or European courses
  • living costs that are very affordable
  • and last but not least, the myriad attractions that make Australia so perfect for students.

The country boasts a superb climate. The people are friendly, live in a safe and healthy environment and students from all over the world are welcomed. In Sydney there are many languages spoken thanks to its cultural diversity, and with over a hundred ethnic groups living in Australia no student will really feel out of place.

Accommodation

There are lots of accommodation choices open to you. Besides living on campus there are other options like renting rooms, home-stay with/without meals, or shared rental accommodation. More often than not students live their own lives in shared apartments where you do your own cooking. This often is the most economical option too.

Recreation

There is a lot of scope for students to strike the right balance between study, relaxation and other activities. There is so much to do and see in Australia that you just might run out of time. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to eat in, there is surfing open to all and there are lots of beaches, lakes and rivers for those who love the water. There are international festivals celebrated that are a must-see for students and others alike.

There are lots of sports facilities and art and culture are catered for too, with galleries, museums, live arts and music etc. There are markets aplenty and shopping is always a fun experience. Probably the best attractions in Australia are its bush land and the wildlife, the outback and the rainforests. Students who have an adventurous streak will enjoy all that Australia has to offer.

Work while you study

If you have a student visa you are allowed to work on a casual basis although it’s wise to remember that the job cannot be a means to fund your education as you need to devote enough time to your studies and exams. This easy earn-while-you-learn option makes Australia very attractive to students as a part time job can fund hobbies and interests leaving the money you and your family saved for course fees to pay the fees.

Student lifestyle in Australia offers the best of both worlds: you get to study in some of the best institutions in the world, you can work to gain experience, and you can learn about the Australian way of life first-hand. There are so many activities to choose from and the overall experience of living in Australia is one, you are not likely to forget in a hurry.

All About Applications for Australian Student Visas

August 4, 2008 by Mira · 1 Comment

Student to go; by orangeacidAs with any other country, institution and courses, Australia too, requires that prospective student apply for the course at the institution of their choice and fill out the necessary applications. Each institution has its own qualifying requirements and their own rules and regulations regarding the course available and the application procedures.

There is help available for filling in enrolment applications as well as the required student visas. If you log on the internet, look for the AA Education Network. This will give you all the information required for applications and admissions. There are counselors online who will guide you through the entire process. The application is best begun about a year prior to when you wish to enroll. You may have appeared for other exams in the mean time and keeping this in mind, a large number of institutions grant provisional admission which includes exams results for English Language proficiency.

When you make out your application to any institution, ensure that you provide:

  • Education background up to date of application with supporting documents
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency, IELT score or other exam results as required by the institution in question
  • Financial documents that indicate you are able to pay for your education and stay

Once all your documents are in place forward to the AA education Network which will then start the processing. Confirmation of enrolment is issued once the application is accepted; a part of the tuition fees and health insurance is paid as required by the course you have selected.

Remember your Confirmation of Enrolment is the only evidence that will be accepted when you apply for your student visa.

Visas

Application for student visas require that…

  • You have been admitted in a registered CRICOS course
  • You meet medical requirements pertaining to overall health condition
  • Have your Overseas Student Health Cover in place
  • Budget for minimum AUD $ 12,000 per annum to cover all costs
  • Clear English Language Proficiency exams
  • Minors must have suitable accommodation arrangements
  • Clear character checks

On your student visa, you are eligible to apply for packaged programs. If you are a citizen of assessment level 1 & 2 countries, you are allowed to convert a business or tourist visa in to a student visa. But citizens from country levels 3 & 4 can do so only under special circumstances.

In case there is need for a change of address then a notification has to be made with DIMA or the Dept. of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs two days prior to actual shift for visa labels 8506 and the university need seven days prior notice for visa labels 8533.

In case of a change in program, if the new course selected is longer in duration than the old then a new student visa will be required. The change requires the approval of the School Head or nominee. Switching institutions within the first year of your selected program is dependent on the stipulations in your visa and transfers are generally approved by DIMA in special cases.

Extension of student visa is possible only if your current visa does not show “further stay” conditions. If you complete your course sooner than expected you are not allowed to stay longer even if your visa has the required time on it. If you plan to travel around the country once your course is over, check with the immigration department for conversion of student visa to tourist visa.

Local administration is always helpful so any problems you face regarding applications and student visas can be dealt with easily and effectively.

Rent

The student phase of life is unforgettable. The fun and frolic interlaced with anxious moments of anticipated results and a lookout for an optimistic future, all couple to present and bestow some of the best memories of a lifetime.

But right along side the worries about availability of intended courses are the financial concerns generated by the high cost of paying the course operators or universities.

It has been rightly said that expenses can sense when you are in a tight spot and start to creep up on you when least expected.

Moreover, it is not only the tuition fee which may wreak the havoc; the smaller demons such books, accommodation, stationary, laptop, excursions, projects etc are also equally capable of creating a new tight spot.

So the search for financial support or sponsors outside the home often starts at this point, and it is exactly at this stage that the need for a Loan provider can become acutely felt.

The good news for students in Australia is that the availability of Loans for students in Australia is pretty easy and hassle free - with the advent of better education and financial policies and inclination of the financial institutions to invest in the future of the nation. Thus various options are available for students in order to obtain a loan which best suits the individual student’s needs, takes account of the requirements the chosen course, and the financial debt bearing capacity of the applicant.

The student Loan schemes provide loans under various repayment options. In fact, the actuality that the loan repayment starts only after the completion of the educational programme makes the loan option much more lucrative and burden free.

The Loan repayment terms proffer a helping hand akin to a guardian thus permitting the student to indulge in his primary concerns leaving aside the financial hardships for a future defrayal. Every loan is a burden but looking at the brighter side one might consider it as an investment for the future which would indeed reap rich dividends.

The advent of various money lending agencies and their keen interest in Students has opened newer vistas for students in pursuit of educational dreams much beyond their financial realm. Further, the easy terms and conditions make the deal more alluring. Preferential lending rates, absence of any application fee and monthly service fee, flexibility of deferred payments

The student loans can be availed by providing a suitable guarantor. The guarantor could the student’s parent or guardian.

The Australian Government revised scheme enables students to obtain loans from the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP). These loans availed by the student are meant purely for the purpose of study fees. As is the case with any other loans, interest accumulates on the HELP loan as per the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The repayment of the availed loan is through the well known tax system. The loan repayments commence when taxable incomes exceed the limits set by the authorities, or after the completion of education as per the scheme selected by the student.

How Overseas Students Become Permanent Australian Residents

June 19, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

It is indeed the dream of many ambitious students to pursue his/her further studies in a place like Australia.

If one is successful in entering one of the prestigious Australian Universities, it is but natural that you start considering the possibility of residing in Australia permanently. People from every nook and corner of the globe are constantly trying to migrate into Australia. The country with its lavish dose of scenic beauty and a rapidly growing strong economy can undoubtedly be one of your best choices for permanent residency.

However, there are certain factors that you need to consider in order to gauge your eligibility levels. This will make the entire process hassle-free and help you further in leading this dream of permanent residency in Australia in the right direction.

The Commonwealth Government of Australia has laid certain pre-requisites that need to be fulfilled by international students before they can be granted permanent residency. No doubt the opportunities for overseas students to apply for permanent residence have been expanded to a great extent. To put these conditions in a nutshell, I have listed these conditions below:

1. It is mandatory that you complete a minimum of two years of full-time education – technical or non-technical - at any educational institution in Australia. It is only after completion of the course and possession of the degree or diploma that you can apply for permanent residency in Australia. In fact, if you have completed certain specific courses, you can even be considered for permanent residency without any previous work experience.

2. The applicant will have to go through the skills assessment test by the concerned Australian authority. This is vital in judging your capabilities and will determine if you satisfy the criteria of permanent resident.

3. The occupation intended after completion of your study must be listed in the SOL (Skilled Occupations List).

4. You must file your application within a period of six months of completion of your course. Else, your application might be treated as invalid.

5. If you have any unlawful records in your two year study period, you will not be in a position to apply for permanent residentcy.

6. The applicant must currently reside in Australia while the application is submitted.

7. The applicant must be less than 45 years of age.

If you do not fulfill the requirements of permanent visa immediately, you may request for a skilled Graduate Visa. This Visa gives you an additional time of 18 months to gear up your qualification for permanent residence (like gaining work experience etc).

Having the basic requirements of Australian permanent residency, I hope you now gear up your preparations and get ready to settle into the Australian way of life. Do not compromise in any manner while putting in all the required efforts that would turn your dream of a new life in Australia into a memorable reality.

I have given the above information so that you will be able to scrutinize your profile and determine your capabilities according to which you will be able to take the right decision.

Government Loans for Permanent Resident Students in Australia

June 18, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

It becomes a challenging affair when you are keen to continue your studies in Australia but your academic dreams may come to a grinding halt due to paucity of funds.

Believe me, it is truly a traumatic experience to go through this stressful period of looking for funds and sponsors that can help you through your further studies. Having gone through this harrowing journey, I thought I might just pen down my findings here so that you guys who are on the look-out for funds for further studies might find some help and guidance.

There is a vigorous competition for the scholarships offered to overseas students by the Australian government. Majority of these scholarships are extended to students undertaking university education especially those pursuing post-graduate study.

One important scheme that comes to my mind is the Endeavour Awards Program which is the brainchild of the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). The aim of this program is to bring in academically excellent students to Australia to pursue short or long-term courses (study or research) in a varied range of subjects.

Many Australian Universities offer loans and scholarships to overseas students who are mainly involved in research or who are pursuing Masters Degree. If you have enrolled yourself in a University that comes under fund granting section of the Higher Education Funding Act, the loan facility is available. The loan covers only the tuition fee charged by the University every semester and does not include the accommodation or other costs of living. You start your repayment process the moment your income level reaches the minimum threshold for mandatory repayment.

Apart from this, there are some loans offered by the University during the course of your term. These loans may be short-term or long-term. The short-term loans are usually availed by students to meet their running financial difficulties or unexpected expenses. With its exclusive student loan funds, the University (only selected ones) tries to help students to tide over sudden financial difficulties.

However, prior to applying for such loans, it is always advised that the students meet the Financial Aid advisor and discuss their financial situation with him and then take the decision of applying for a loan. Strict repayment schedules are laid while offering these loans and failure to meet them will result in serious academic disasters for the students. Your results may be withheld or graduation not allowed. Hence dedicate yourself to the task of repaying these loans prior to availing them.

The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) is another excellent system by which the Commonwealth Government extends a helping hand to students who wish to pursue their studies further. There are 3 kinds of HELP loan facilities available to students.

HECS-HELP - This loan is offered to eligible students who are supported by the
Commonwealth to defer their Student Contribution Charge. An Australian citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa is eligible for this loan.

FEE-HELP - This loan is given to under-graduate or post-graduate students who have difficulty in paying their fee to the universities. Australian citizen or permanent residents can avail this facility.

OS-HELP - This facility is available to eligible under-graduate Commonwealth student wishing to pursue part of their study overseas.

All the above loans are to be repaid through the taxation system once your income reaches the particular repayment level.

Even though I have guided you through some loan options, I would always advise students to follow money management to avoid sudden monetary pitfalls. Make sincere efforts to track your expenses. Shop in a sensible manner and try to minimize costs wherever possible. This would enable you to be financially strong and even if you avail any loan, the amount of debt can be reduced to a minimum which makes the repayment schedule non-taxing for you.
