The Australian government announced increases to the minimum salary level (MSL) paid to temporary migrant workers from August 2008. The increase will be paid to all holders of a 457 visa including those already working in the country.

These increases are part of a reform package intended to strengthen the temporary skilled migration (457 visa) program.

Some of the Key Features of the Reforms:

  • increases the safety net for skilled migrant workers
  • protects them from unscrupulous employers who may wish to exploit them
  • if a prescribed salary level is higher than the MSL, then it must be paid
  • there will be an information campaign to ensure existing visa holders are aware of the changes
  • the 457 visa scheme is important to the Australian economy and the community is encouraged to support it
  • strong monitoring of the processes and penalties for employers failing to do the right thing

There are rights and responsibilities on both 457 visa holders and employers and it is important that everyone plays their part. The Department for Immigration and Citizenship plans a comprehensive information strategy to ensure everyone knows what they should be doing. So there will be no excuse for those who get it wrong.

The salary increases are only part of the reform package which aims to strengthen the Australian economy with the help of sponsor employers and skilled migrant workers.

Major Staffing From UK In Australia

August 8, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

United Kingdom plays a major role in filling many job roles in Australia.

Big Ben - by Hari Menon

If you are a person with engineering skills, or skilled trades residing in United Kingdom and on the look out for a job in Australia, you are sure to land up with the best jobs available. This is because there are many vacant positions for these roles in Australia. Immigrants from the United Kingdom secure the majority of these positions. Other nationalities successful in securing jobs are Chinese and South Africans - in second and third positions respectively.

Australia is a major source of jobs for many countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and India in addition to United Kingdom, China and South Africa. There are many reasons which contribute to people in United Kingdom moving to Australia for employment.

One major reason everyone knows is that the cost of living in the United Kingdom, especially in London, has drastically increased. This has made people look for places to live with more affordable cost of living, and a good work environment. Australia stands first in line!

The other main reason that you can notice for people of United Kingdom occupying a major chunk of staffing positions in Australia is the lag in education and training in Australia. This results in Australian employers facing skill shortages and hence the need for importing labor.

Since people from United Kingdom are skilled and often interested in migrating to Australia, a high proportion of Australia’s skills shortfall is made up by United Kingdom immigrants.

TV series like ‘Neighbors’, and advertisements shown on Australian television, play a major role in creating interest among the British to migrate to Australia. This is easily confirmed by talking to directors of specialist overseas recruitment firms.

Last but not the least, another influence which plays a major factor is that we all prefer to move to a place where and friends and relatives have already migrated.

If you are a graduate from United Kingdom and working for an international company, you are permitted to work in the Australian branch for a period of time. Australia features a nourishing and competitive western-style, capitalist economy. This competes on a global level and attracts people from countries like United Kingdom for Australian jobs. The Australian government always extends a welcoming hand to people having outstanding skills and attributes from any country to fill its shortage of skilled workers.

If you submit all the relevant documents and details properly filed for visa processing, the visa processing system in Australia is fast and efficient.

There is also eVisitor service launched by the Australian Visa department which will further enhance the convenience and speed of online applications. This helps people migrate more quickly to Australia without any hindrance and take up their job faster. All these factors play an important role in United Kingdom’s contribution towards providing staffing solutions in the Australian job market.

Australian Study Grant For Working Woman

July 7, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

reposted from Wealth Creator Magazine

Working women who don’t have qualifications are being given a boost by the government to enhance their career prospects, in an effort to advance the female workforce. Australia’s mentorship program for working women, My Mentor, has partnered with Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE, and the Federal Government to help women access a $4000 contribution to mentoring and a qualification in business.

The grant will enable women throughout Australia, with no formal business qualifications, to undertake vocational education training and/or RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) assessment to achieve a Certificate IV in Business, valued at $2500.

“Women need not be scared by the thought of studying, as Recognition of Prior Learning through the TAFE program will mean that many of their existing skill sets and experience will earn them credit toward the Cert IV program,” said Maureen Frank, Emberin Managing Director, and My Mentor creator.

Ms Frank is urging organisations that employ women with no formal business qualifications to take advantage of the $4K government grant to support the professional development of their female staff, a group who have a huge impact on a company’s bottom line.

“The cost to Australian companies losing their female employees is around 1.5 times the salary they are paid – for some organisations this is millions of dollars every year,” she said.

Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE will work with women anywhere in Australia who are Australian residents, via on-line study methods to help them complete the Certificate IV in Business, valued at $2,500.

“The balance of the $4K funding can then be used to pay for the My Mentor program, any other adjunct learning’s required to complete the Certificate or into a pool within the organisation to support the training and development needs of other women,” Ms Frank said.

With the funding likely to be cut from July 1st 2008, interested ladies who sign up prior to that date will be eligible to commence their study later in the year with the $4000 grant being paid to their employer for their training needs.

Consisting of a DVD, CD and comprehensive workbooks, it was developed to combat the serious issue faced by women in the workforce leaving to have children or to achieve better workplace conditions and mentorship.

Casual Employment a Stepping Stone to Permanent Employment in Australia

July 1, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

Casual employment which is generally termed as non-standard forms of employment is steadily increasing its share of total employment in Australia.

The employment nature in Australians in recent days has changed a lot. Many prefer getting employed on a casual basis. The statistical research report given by Australian Bureau of Statistics on the data collected in this aspect indicates that about 26.9% of Australian working people are on casual employment.

In 1997 the research done by Simpson, Dawkins and Madden showed that in the period from 1984-93 rate of casual employment increased in the total proportion of total employees. The highest casual employment occurred in sectors like electricity, gas, water, agriculture and tourism and Mining with states like Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania recoding highest casual employments in Australia.

I have many of my friends who like and work in casual jobs in Australia. Many professional females in Australia find the non-standard forms of employment like casual employment more flexible and easier to take up along with their family works. The reasons for these are enormous.

Some of the reasons to state for increasing number of casual employment in Australia are:

Casual jobs in Australia are easier to get. In fact if you have very good English skills you would very soon land up in casual jobs in Australia.

The payment structure of causal jobs in Australia is per hour basis and is also quite attractive which make people to prefer the same. Even an average person can get paid roughly about 14.50 Australian dollars per hour. This remuneration amount would get increased depending on years of experience and skills of an individual.

Casual work in Australia is the biggest sector of the economy which contributes a vital part in increasing the number of casual employment in Australia. These factors result towards the full time jobs to slowly disappear from job market.

Greater change in global employment patterns and lifestyle of people also made Australian employees to give high value for their health and safety in work place along with social and family life. These made the people in Australia to turn their career choice towards casual employment.

Due to the increase in casual employment in Australia almost all people in Australia are employed. The statistical report recorded that in 2004 Australia recorded the least unemployment rating in world.

Factors like policies designed by government to improve international competitiveness, high floating exchange rates and deregulation in financial department made employers to prefer flexibility in employment. This contributes a lot towards the non-standard form of employment namely casual employment in Australia.

Even the increase in the number of employees in job market plays as a factor for raise in causal employment in Australia.

From the above points which details on the reasons for increases in casual employment in Australia it is clear that both demand-side and supply-side factors have contributed to the spread of casual employment in Australia. In fact the casual employment in Australia provides an important stepping stone to permanent employment for many Australians.

Position of Foreign Graduates in the Australia Job Market

June 26, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

Australia is no doubt a great place to work for career improvement.

Employers in the Australian job market use aggressive strategies to target candidates. Because of the prosperous job availability in Australia, for many overseas students, Australia remains a destination of choice.

Many organizations in Australia prefer to take foreign graduates termed as untapped talent pools, particularly those awaiting permanent residency.

Are Foreign graduates Succeful in the Australian Job Market?

But foreign graduates must be aware of the job market in Australia. This would help foreign graduates to equip and qualify themselves well and make their entry in the Australian job market easier.

Recently, research was conducted by professor of Monash University and his assistant on how successful foreign migrants graduating from Australian universities are in the job market. The research was done taking a wide period of 5 years from 2001 to 2006. The result of the report stated that only a very minimum number of qualified foreign graduates for work areas are successful in job market. The report gave a statistical analysis that Australia is occupied in majority by Chinese foreign graduates. The Chinese students mostly take Accounts as their major and among these successful Chinese Accounts graduates, only twenty two percent were successful in the Australian job market.

However, Australian accounting graduates very easily succeed with flying colors in the Australian job market.

The Key to an Australian Immigrants Success in the Australian Job Market

The main reason for this being, overseas students whose first language is not English are graduating from Australian universities. This makes them difficult to succeed in Australian job market for which English communication takes the highest priority.

To overcome this position of foreign graduates in Australian job market the first step was taken by IDP Education Australia. They introduce the plan of testing the English skill twice for foreign students. The English skill tests are done before students get enrolled for graduation in Australia and after their graduation is successfully completed. This would enable the students to know their position in English skill and improve them for getting higher success rate in job market starting from their first year of education. In fact, many Australian universities started insisting that foreign graduates should take remedial communication courses. This helps the foreign graduates to achieve professional standards before they could complete their studies and enter job market.

Proof That Good Jobs Are Available for Foreign Graduates

The number of permanent skilled migration granted to graduates is increasing in recent days which is solid proof to show that good jobs are available for foreign graduates in Australia.

The statistical report on the number of permanent skilled migration granted for foreign graduates in the period 2005-06 is 18,226 which numbered greater than the previous year. This proves that its a healthier environment for foreign graduates in the job market.

Many companies take different steps to boost their chances of attracting foreign graduates. Some steps taken by organizations in this direction are graduate recruitment campaigns, short-term project placements, careers fairs and so on. Having wide opportunities open, it is in the hands of foreign graduates to qualify themselves well for their best fit in the job market.

Thus, foreign graduates, if they take steps to improve their pipeline of talent, they are sure to get well placed in the glorious job market in Australia.

Australian Job Market An Excellent Career Destination for Foreigners

June 23, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

According to the report given by Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2007, about 9% of qualified Australians are unemployed.

The line of job search of unemployed Australians in the job market for Australia is on the increasing scale. As per this report, most of their time, say about 16 weeks on an average, is fully spent for searching for jobs.

The report states that even among the all employed people percentage, everyone is not employed full time. Only about 65% are employed for full time and about 25% employed part time with 10% among this working both full and part time.

After reading this report, I started taking out the earlier year’s statistics of unemployment rates in Australia. I thought of comparing the unemployment rate in Australia for various years which helped me in arriving at a conclusion. The unemployment rate in Australia in October 2001 was about 7% which changed to 5.1% in June 2005. In June 2006, this further decreased to 4.9%. So the Australian government took the decision for filling this small gap with candidates having attributes of high skills and specialized skills in their work area.

Actually this is a healthier environment and encouraging situation for all people like me who have a good skill set and want to work in Australia.

There is a huge demand for specialist skills which enables top recruiters to search for skilled worked among different countries.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics also took statistics about people who did not participate in job searches throughout the year. The future of these results estimates to about 4.7 million people. These people were not looking for any work and so did not even think about job search. Of these statistical estimates, about 39% were already retired and about 28% were home makers. The physically challenged people estimates to 7% who did not participate in job searches throughout the year.

I personally wanted to work in Australia for greater career growth and for getting excellent pay for my skills. From my work experience in Australia for 4 years, I could surely say that I got both of these satisfied to the highest level.

In the recent days, though the economy may be on the downward scale, the salaries for all employees across different sectors have been consistently rising in Australia. I found this in my work experience across main states like South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia. This solid good payment structure helps Australians in building strong business strength.

I am working in the information technology sector and one of my friends is working in the construction and property sector. With an ongoing discussion and research about payments among the different sectors we could find out that sectors like construction and property, manufacturing and operations and procurement have excellent pay structures. Queensland in Australia leads in payment structure particularly in civil and structural engineering and construction and property sector.

I reside in Sydney and my cadre namely program manager received a salary rise reaching up to $150,000 to $170,000 which is a remarkably excellent one. The best part of this salary increase is even the candidates working in helpdesk support or service desk having about one or two years experience got a good salary raise of about 11.6% on an average.

So from my experience and published research report given by officials, the job market in Australia is highly lucrative and an excellent career destination for foreigners.

9 Tips for Writing a Great Resume in Australia

June 16, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

It is indeed an interesting task to find the job that offers you the great combination of security, flexibility and variety.

However, to be lucky to locate this job and get placed in it depends a lot on the initial spadework done by you.

Believe me, your resume or the Curriculum Vitae as they say, may just be the first and most vital step in your search for that balance between your personal and professional development. This is so true if your job-hunting is going to happen in a place like Australia where the job outlook is exceptionally outstanding and professional skills are in great demand. Hence, wake up to the reality of shaping your resume and impressing the employer at the first instance.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind before writing your resume in Australia.

1. Remember!! Your resume is the initial platform on which you present yourself before the employer. Keep in mind this important fact and try to project yourself through your resume which is your marketing device.

2. Before starting to write your resume, critically evaluate your skills and capabilities and decide on the points that will be included in the resume.

3. To begin with give a precise description of your personal details like name, nationality, gender, etc.

4. The next important point that will be listed in the resume is your career objective as this will catch the eye of the employer. He/She would be interested in looking for people who are suited to their requirements.

5. Your job skills, academic qualifications and work experience should form the nucleus of your resume. Do not forget to mention the exact duration of your previous work experiences along with the nature of the job and your responsibility and achievement in that company. Any awards or recognition received should be mentioned. However, do not make this part a very lengthy one that bores the reader. Let it be an exciting description that also mentions your future objectives.

6. While mentioning your future plans, try to point out how this job is capable of facilitating the fulfillment of your career plans thereby giving the employer a small hint about the mutual benefits that can be enjoyed by offering the job to you.

7. Never forget to furnish your contact numbers in the resume. Ensure that your resume is always updated with your current contact numbers. Accessibility is an important factor that many people tend to ignore while preparing their resume.

8. It is always imperative to include specialized skills like knowledge of any foreign languages, computer literacy (if the job is a non-technical one). These points may add credence to your resume and your employer might consider you over the other applicants.

9. References from people who are capable of providing unbiased opinions about you and your previous work related activities is a must in your resume. But please do not forget to mention clearly the details of the referees.

Your resume is the mirror of your personality and your achievements in life so far. Hence pay due attention to the details.

Once it is complete, do a spell-check and grammar-check thoroughly. Keep in mind always that it is through the resume that your first meeting with the employer happens and the rest follows its due course.

So, obviously, you want to make a beginning in the right direction and in the correct manner. Good Luck!!!

Living and Working in Australia

June 12, 2008 by Mira · Leave a Comment

Working in Australia and making my move to Australia from UK was one of my best career options as I got the chance to work with the major international clients.

Australian beach - source: Brentbat

I was lucky enough to get a fantastic house for my living in Australia. The owner of the house, being an interior designer, has designed the house very creatively.

I noticed a great difference in the work environment of UK and Australia and everyone was friendly.

If you are planning to make your search for working options in Australia, the essential criteria you must have is the ability to speak English in fluently. People from English speaking countries would find their entry easier than anyone else. This is because if you are a person from a Non English speaking country, then you would be required to pass an English test to prove your proficiency in English. This is the most vital step for getting work in Australia. I went through this step quite easily as I am from an English speaking country. The recent reciprocal visa agreement between the United States and Australia makes working in Australia easier and comfortable for many people.

My profession is related to software and information technology which is a very well recognized profession in Australia. Once the proficiency in English skill is proven, the next important process is to qualify for your profession or work as per Australian rules and norms. That is for instance, if you are a doctor by profession, though you would have all qualifications recognized in you country, it is vital to qualify and pass certification as per Australian regulations.

Recently, one of my friends who is a medical professional, while trying to make her move to Australia, got the update that foreign medical professionals are no longer valid under Australian state health care scheme. So it is vital to know the recent updates in rules and regulations while making your move to Australia related to work. For getting a complete idea related to your work area and skills recognition in Australia, you can refer to the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) dictionary. I found this quite useful.

One more important point one should remember is to carry all the documents related to education, certification, and work experience. This is vital even if you are on a temporary visa or full time visa. I had all this along with copies of my references in hand along with my resume so that I can use it as and when required.

The popular areas where foreign people could get work easily and have lots of vacancies in Australia are hospitality, software, IT and tourism.

With regard to my work life, I love Perth - part of Western Australia. This is because I found the city having a lot of facilities for trains and buses and I could reach my work place well on time even if I start late. I love my work and life experience in Sydney a lot and I am having a great exciting work and lifestyle in Australia.
